North Shore Community Development Coalition, Salem, MA
The North Shore CDC is a regional community development organization focused on revitalizing low-income and distressed neighborhoods in Salem, Peabody, and Beverly, MA. The North Shore CDC has asked Jones Architecture to assist with three ongoing renovation projects. Each of these will serve a critical role in the NSCDC’s mission to support the local community in myriad ways.
105 Congress Street: Espacio Community Center:
This renovation is fit-out of an existing space to serve as a multi-purpose space, anticipated to be used for demonstration cooking, community meetings and presentations, small group meetings, yoga, dance, dominoes, and about anything else that you can imagine. Flexible furniture, and means of sub-dividing the space allow for multiple events to occur concurrently.
98 Lafayette Street: Youthbuild Workshop/Gallery:
With the move of the NSCDC offices to an adjacent building, this space became available to be used for the Youthbuild program. Youthbuild gives local youth an opportunity to apprentice as carpenters, learn about construction and the building trades. The space will include a gallery, offices, classroom, workshop, and tool storage.
102 Lafayette Street:
Several programs are being explored as tenants for this new space as part of a conceptual design study – design or artist studios, office space, or a commercial/restaurant client.
“Working with Jones Architecture on the design of our new community space, Espacio, has been a wonderful experience. They brought exactly what we hoped they would to the project – a superb overall aesthetic, thoughtful finish choices, and a functional design. Espacio will serve the community with all sorts of programming and activities in a space they can be proud of for years to come.”
