Warren Street Residence
Salem, MA

OVERVIEW
Located in the McIntire Historic District of Salem, MA, this two-story Dutch colonial is flooded with light and floor-through spaces at the ground floor that offer views to the street, and a spacious terrace and backyard. Renovations included updates to all finishes throughout, reconfiguration of the kitchen and living room, full kitchen renovation, and a small addition housing a mudroom and powder room. Respect for period detail permeates the design solutions in the form of new casework around the fireplace, custom kitchen cabinets integrated with off-the-shelf modern cabinets, and mudroom built-ins.
An integrated solution with the landscape architecture makes the exterior living space part of the daily ritual for these owners. The new front entry and walk creates a formal approach to the house. A granite cobble and gravel driveway replaced the existing asphalt and concrete. New fencing creates a refuge of this through-lot (and a pet-proof enclosure!). The combination of the terrace, site wall, line of river birch trees, raised vegetable planting bed, and overhead trapeze lights create an outdoor room usable for three seasons.
