Amazing morning keynote led by Doreen Gehry Nelson about her design based learning model. She was joined onstage by her older brother, Frank Gehry. They shared stories of starting Doreen's City Building classroom experiments in the late 60's in Los Angeles (including film footage of kids in action!). Amazing to learn about this program and the history ... the school was across the street from the office of Charles and Ray Eames! What a time that must have been.
This is not to say that they did not face challenges. Traditional models dominated the K-12 landscape at that time and there was a great deal of resistance to the active, hands on, design based learning. Doreen said it best when she said that education should strive to "teach the kids, not the curriculum".
