Community Spaces
North Shore Community Development Coalition, Salem, MA
The North Shore Community Development Corporation (NSCDC) is a regional community development organization focused on revitalizing low-income and distressed neighborhoods in Salem, Peabody, and Beverly, MA. The NSCDC has asked Jones to assist with several ongoing renovation projects. Each of these will serve a critical role in the organization's mission to support the local community in myriad ways.
98-102 Lafayette Street, Salem, MA:
Previously the building served as offices for the NSCDC but has been vacant and used for storage since 2017. The renovated first floor of the building will serve multiple community focused functions. On the 98 Lafayette side a semi-permanent gallery space will incorporate murals and artwork from local artists. The rear area will serve as a green room for artists working in the neighborhood and include paints and supply storage, a lounge, kitchenette, and bathrooms.
A coffee bar operated by a local vendor will anchor the 102 Lafayette side, envisioned as a Dominican coffee bar. A gift shop will occupy the middle third of the space and the rear of the space will serve as a visitor center, arts education classroom and gathering space for tours of the Punto neighborhood. New doors to the rear courtyard behind the building will access the Casa de Abuela, a separate project envisioned as a Dominican "Grandmother's House." The storefronts along Lafayette street will be completely replaced with a design that references the historic nature of the building.
105 Congress Street, Salem, MA - Espacio Community Center:
This renovation is a fit-out of an existing space to serve as a multi-purpose space, anticipated to be used for demonstration cooking, community meetings and presentations, small group meetings, yoga, dance, dominoes, and about anything else that you can imagine. Flexible furniture, and means of sub-dividing the space allow for multiple events to occur concurrently.
“Working with Jones Architecture on the design of our new community space, Espacio, has been a wonderful experience. They brought exactly what we hoped they would to the project—a superb overall aesthetic, thoughtful finish choices, and a functional design. Espacio will serve the community with all sorts of programming and activities in a space they can be proud of for years to come.”
